June at the Maser Gallery
An exclusive showing of the art of Grace Hopkins will be on display at the Maser Gallery at Falmouth Community Television from May 29 through June 30, 2016. The public is invited to attend the Opening Reception, Sunday, May 29, from 3:00-5:00 pm.
Grace Hopkins was born in Hyannis and grew up splitting time between New York City and Wellfleet. She attended Friends Seminary in NYC for high school and then Hampshire College in Amherst and graduated with a BFA from Tufts University and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston.
After her father, celebrated artist Budd Hopkins, passed away in 2011, Grace returned to the family home in Wellfleet full time to work on his estate. She is planning a major retrospective of her father’s paintings for a traveling exhibit which will begin in the summer of 2017. Now residing in Truro, Grace is the manager of the Berta Walker Galleries in Provincetown and Wellfleet.
Of her work, Grace says: “They are photographs, but people think they are paintings. Technically, they are straight photographs taken of actual things that exist in the world and are not manipulated, but they look like and feel like abstract paintings. Emotionally, they are all about painting. I travel down alleys and into the dark corners of world people avoid to find the exquisiteness in the horrid. Color is crucial to me. I believe in the power of color and how it affects mood. I want people to walk into a roomful of my photographs and feel surrounded by the color and the warmth that emanates from them. In addition, I want people to have the bold composition of color, shadow, lights and blacks challenge them to find their footing within the picture.”
While she was Assistant Dean of Admissions at the School of the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, Grace planned several administrative retreats in Falmouth and she fell in love with the town. As an artist and photographer, she has exhibited extensively on the Outer Cape, and at many New England venues as well as Florida and New York. This is her first time exhibiting in the Falmouth area and her first show at the Maser Gallery.
