Alliance Applauds Congresswoman Baldwin's Continuing Efforts on Behalf of Community Access Television
Debra Rogers, Chair of the Alliance for Community Media, issued the
following statement today in response to the introduction and
subsequent withdraw of an amendment that would have attached the CAP
Act (H.R. 3745) to H.R. 3101, the "Twenty-First Century Communications
and Video Accessibility Act of 2010."
"The access community has been fortunate to have the leadership of
Representative Baldwin (D-Wis.) in these challenging times. First,
she worked with the Alliance for Community Media, the National
Association of Telecommunications Officers and Advisors, and other
allies to craft H.R. 3745, the Community Access Preservation Act.
Since the bill's introduction she has been tireless in her efforts to
champion the legislation. Today, in yet another effort to protect
local communities' rights to community programming, Representative
Baldwin spotlighted the challenges PEG access is facing by means of
offering an amendment to H.R. 3101, legislation to update the
Americans with Disabilities Act, a bill that enjoys bi-partisan support.
Before a parliamentary challenge forced Rep. Baldwin to withdraw her
amendment, Representative Baldwin delivered an impassioned
presentation of the challenges facing the access community and
obtained a commitment from the committee leadership to act on the
issue. PEG access channels and studios across the country are
threatened today and Representative Baldwin has stood strong in the
public's defense. We are grateful to her for addressing the urgency
of this matter today and we pledge the Alliance's renewed efforts to
seek passage of the CAP Act (H.R. 3745).
