"Aileen"

An exhibition of artworks by Falmouth artist David F. Kelley will be on display at the Maser Gallery, Falmouth Community Television, 310A Dillingham Avenue, from January 31 – March 4. RECEPTION: Sunday, January 31, 2010, 3 to 5 p.m.

Enjoying a full career as both a designer-illustrator and fine artist, David Kelley has managed to combine many skills including graphic and book design, printing production, sports photography and graphics, medical and scientific illustration, printmaking and painting. His career got launched as a book designer working for 12 years in educational publishing for Houghton Mifflin and then Ginn and Company in Boston prior to entering the freelance world.

A graduate of Providence College, Mr. Kelley also studied at Rhode Island School of Design, the Hartford Art School, and the Franklin Institute of Boston. He served as past President of both the Falmouth Artists Guild and the South Shore Art Center in Cohasset; as a board member of the Falmouth Artists Guild and a member of the Falmouth Cultural Council.

Although he works in a variety of media, Mr. Kelley paints primarily in pastels. “I’ve always been a painter and have found that my experiments and unrestricted creativity provide the foundation to better enable me to solve problems as a designer,” says David. “Working in different mediums always gives new perspectives to the visual problems one is working on at the time.”

He won awards recently at the Duxbury and Cape Cod Art Associations, the Falmouth Artists Guild, and won a contest to design the 2006 South Shore Art Festival Program cover. He was featured in an article in the Falmouth Enterprise as the September 2006 Artist of the Month for the Falmouth Artists Guild, and in a July 2008 article in the Falmouth Bulletin. 2009 was a year of achievements with “Best Pastel” awards at the All Cape Cod Show at CCAA and the Artists Guild Summer Juried Show. He was also selected as a “Signature Member” of the Pastel Painters Society of Cape Cod, and his drawing “Windy Green Pond” was selected for the book Strokes of Genius 2, best of drawing published by Northlight Books. This drawing will be featured in his Maser Gallery show along with others that have won awards at juried shows throughout the Cape.

Besides hosting the premier showing of a pastel painting of his daughter entitled “Aileen,” this exhibit includes Mr. Kelley’s wildlife interpretations in mixed media (watercolor and pen and ink), which exude characteristic brilliant colors and masterful design.
