December 2009 - Paintings by Gayle Visentine Reynolds

Painting by Gayle Visentine Reynolds

An exhibition of paintings titled “Visual Emotions” by Falmouth and Lexington resident Gayle Visentine Reynolds is on display at the Maser Gallery at FCTV Community Television, 310 Dillingham Avenue, from December 6 – 31, 2009.

A practitioner of art and design throughout her adolescent and adult life, Gayle Visentine Reynolds “explores mood and emotional nuance using color, dynamic physical gesture and controlled accidents to create large acrylic, bold abstract paintings, as well as works in other mediums.”

According to Ms. Reynolds, the effects of light, color and spatial relationships along with variegated surface textures express the passions in our lives. For her, each new work provides a heightened expectation of renewal of nature or of a reflected image. Ms. Reynolds also creates artworks in mixed media, encaustic and collage work, incorporating oil paints, oil sticks, and color pencils.

“Most of my works exhibited at the Maser have been inspired by my love of nature.” The brilliant sky, water, and land on a sunny day versus the same elements on a cloudy one, inspires my mood and emotions when I create,” explains Ms. Reynolds, who uses textures and strong contrast of light and dark to convey her emotions and passions.

Her collage works are composed of found or recycled materials. She is delighted “when a collage comes together to tell a story.” For example, her piece “A Load of Poison Ivy” is an actual hand-written note, which she found in an attic sale in a 1900 period home.

A graduate of Maryville College in St. Louis, MO, with a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Interior Design and Art History, Ms. Reynolds has furthered her painting studies at the School of the MFA, the De Cordova Museum School and the Cape Cod Museum of Art.

Her work has been exhibited and accepted in juried shows in Massachusetts and the Cape, winning “Best of Show” (Stormy Days” at the Cambridge Art Association). Other artworks have been juried into the Holiday Show at the Broomfield Gallery in Boston; also, her painting “Invasion” was juried into the Emerging Artists of Cape Cod exhibit at the Cape Cod Museum of Art. And in 2008, Ms. Reynolds’ work “Elements” received a purchase award from ALL Arts Gallery in Lowell.
