April 2009: "Up Close and Personal" Artworks by Alice Galick and Muriel Locklin
An exhibition of artworks including monoprints, watercolors, oils, acrylics, and photographs by Falmouth residents Alice Nicholson Galick and Muriel L. Henault Locklin was on display at the Maser Gallery at FCTV Community Television, 310 Dillingham Avenue, from April 5 – 29. RECEPTION: Sunday, April 19, 3 to 5 p.m.
Titled “Up Close and Personal,” the works of artists Ms. Galick and Ms. Locklin reflect their respective style and personal “brush” with human nature and landscapes.
“I use monoprint to express my imagery because it allows me to ‘paint’ with the press and work on paper,” says Ms. Galick. “Drawing from nature and the figure, my work reflects my interpretation of space and color. The landscape and figures are my passion, and abstraction becomes my way of seeing the world,” Ms. Galick says, who layers her images in transparent color and use the monotype for its unique possibilities.
A monoprint is a form of printmaking where an original image is painted onto a plate (metal or Plexiglas) and transferred by that plate onto paper by a press or by hand – thus one-of-a-kind.
Ms. Galick “enjoys taking a certain place or image and repeating it many ways.” Working in a series gives her a dialogue with the subject; monotypes also give her the freedom to do each piece as a unique painting.
"Teaching always teaches the teacher”, explains Ms. Galick, who has been an art teacher for 30 years in middle and high school and conducted workshops for adults. Currently she is a Falmouth Artist Guild instructor and active board member of the Printmakers of Cape Cod.
In 2008 Ms. Galick has exhibited at Highfield Hall, Falmouth Artist Guild, Provincetown Art Assoc. Museum, Cape Cod Art Assoc., Chatham Art Center, and most recently Bellezza Gallery in Falmouth and West Side Gallery in West Hartford, CT.
Ms. Galick, a native of North Carolina, received an MA from Hartford Art School. Her work has been exhibited in juried shows throughout Connecticut and Massachusetts as both solo and group exhibitions.
Ms. Locklin, a versatile artist, works in printmaking, watercolors, oils, acrylics and mixed media. Her inspiration to create comes from traveling through the U.S. and abroad. “Everywhere I go, I photograph many beautiful scenes and people. Most of my work is representational, sometimes historical, but always from the heart,” she explains.
A recipient of awards in juried shows in her various mediums in Massachusetts and Rhode Island art associations such as Blackstone Valley, Milford, Franklin, Warren, Woonsocket Fine Arts Society, the American Printmakers exhibition in Montreal, among others, Ms. Locklin is included in the current 25th Anniversary edition of “Who’s Who in American Women.” Her two prints were included in a recent Printmakers of Cape Cod Show at the Cape Cod Museum of Art. She also was an invited artist participating in the Cape Cod Whale Trail.
In 2008, alone, her work was included in juried shows at: Falmouth Artists Guild, Printmakers Trail at Highfield Hall, the Creative Arts Center (Chatham) and the Provincetown Art Association and Museum.
A Magna Cum Laude graduate from Framingham State College in 1990 and Associates degree from Dean College, Ms. Locklin has also studied in Mexico, New York, and Wales. Her work is in many private collections throughout New England, Tennessee, California, Japan, France and Canada.
As treasurer of the Printmakers of Cape Cod and the Bourne-Wareham Art Associations, Ms. Locklin volunteers at The Falmouth Historical Society and Falmouth Hospital Auxiliary. She co-chaired exhibits for the Monotype Guild of New England and the Printmakers of Cape Cod at the Federal Reserve and UMass Medical Center in Worcester, respectively.
Ms. Locklin is a member of Cape Cod and Duxbury Art Associations, Falmouth Artists Guild, Monotype Guild of New England and the Arts Foundation of Cape Cod.
