September 2009: "Printed Visions" Small Works by The Printmakers of Cape Cod
An exhibition of small works by members of The Printmakers of Cape Cod was on display at the Maser Gallery at FCTV Community Television, 310 Dillingham Avenue, from August 30 to October 1, 2009. RECEPTION: Sunday, September 13, 3 to 5 p.m.
The Printmakers of Cape Cod was founded in 1976 by a small group of artists, led by the late Ruthe M. Berry of Orleans, dedicated to creating original fine art prints. Today, there are well over one hundred members.
Transferring a layer of ink from a printing surface onto paper makes a print. The type of printing surface used and the manner in which the surface carries the ink, defines the various printmaking technique.
On exhibit are small works that present a wide assortment of printmaking methods such as etching, monotype/monoprint, woodcut, relief prints, collagraphs, linocut, solar plate, and white line, to name a few methodologies. Falmouth artists exhibiting are Thomas E. Hanley, Francis Hersey, Jane Lincoln, Alice Nicholson Galick, Muriel L. Henault Locklin, Evan Charney, among others.
The Printmakers, in addition to creating fine art prints, are dedicated to educating the public about their various methods of printmaking through lectures, demonstrations and workshops. The workshops, led by locally and nationally known artists, in the past, have focused on oil and water-based monotypes, woodcuts, acid-free etching and solar plate etching.
The Printmakers of Cape Cod awards its annual Marcia Howe Memorial scholarships to high school graduates on the Cape who show exceptional artistic ability and desire to further their art studies. Julia Powers of East Falmouth is one of three recipients in 2009.
“Seeing an exhibit of printmaking with its historical and contemporary methods is an eye-opening experience of our special artworks,” says Muriel L. Henault Locklin, treasurer of the association. “We hope this array of prints will inspire viewers to want to learn more.”
