Watercolors by Louise Luckenbill - New pieces added! Visit Maser Gallery!

A collection of Louise Luckenbill’s watercolor paintings entitled “Celebrating Our Rooted Friends” will be on display at the Maser Gallery at Falmouth Community Television from July 1 through August 2, 2012. ALL PIECES FOR SALE.

Trained in developmental and cell biology, Louise enjoyed a career in university teaching and research, then retired and took up painting. “I have a great- grandmother who entertained her grandchildren, including my dad, by drawing on a slate, so I figured I might have some ability to make art, too,” Luckenbill said. She has studied painting with teachers at the Falmouth Artists Guild, Lesley University, Ghost Ranch, and the School of the Museum of Fine Arts. This is her second exhibition at the Maser Gallery; the first, in July 2009, was “Water + Color = Adventure.”

The origins of the current show began when she was a freshman biology student at Oberlin College, inspired by the uniqueness of plants by her lab professor, a botanist. She has painted trees in different seasons, different environments and different places, from Texas to England, to Maine, to her own back yard. She said, “I have always felt a strong relationship and have meditated on one particular tree everywhere I have lived. The shapes and patterns of trees remind me of the physical attitudes of people.” Trees, alone or in landscapes, comprise half of the paintings in the show; other works are shrubs, flowers and vegetables. She favors water media because of their unpredictable, spontaneous nature.

In her artist’s statement, Louise writes, “Painting is a way to find patterns and colors that convey life’s energy and its moods. Art creates a synergy between plants and humans. This is more important to me than botanical rendering. I try to capture movement and growth which reflect the essence of creatures of the plant kingdom, despite their rooted nature.”
